How bearish can we be on mining stocks – the world’s No 1 analyst Roger Bade warns things will get worse

The world’s No 1 mining analyst Roger Bade of Whitman Howard has produced his quarterly review and while there are a few new buy ideas, such as Amara (AMA), on the whole his tone is as bearish as ever. Anyone who says how some mining juniors should be “viewed with contempt” is a top man. Although Mr Bade’s less than complimentary words about the quite excellent Women in Mining organisation run by mining guru Amanda Van Dyke (pictured left since she is a tad more photogenic than Mr Bade, actually that is not Amanda but I cannot find a pic of her on this website) have “been noted”.  Naughty. The review makes for sobering reading for anyone still investing in this sector. Mr Bade writes:

Q & A with Sally Schofield of Edenville Energy

I met up with sally Schofield the chairman of Edenville Energy (EDL) the other day for a catch up quiz session on how her company is going.

Q. Sally I did not see you at the Women in Mining champagne reception at Mines & Money last week. Do you not regard swilling champagne with a bunch of City tossers as part of your job?
A.  We’re lucky to have an intelligent and supportive shareholder base and very professional corporate support.  There may be ‘tossers’ out there but I don’t meet that many of them!  We do circulate at these events whenever possible; by its very nature the Women in Mining remit meant Rakesh or Rufus were not great candidates to stand in and represent the Company.  However, Halimah Hussain from Blythe Weigh (our newly appointed PR Company) passed the gender test and she did the rounds on behalf of Edenville.

Q. You published an update on your Rukwa coal project the other day. There seems to have been good news from Tanzania on the construction of a national grid. Can you explain what has happened and why this assists Edenville?

Mines & Money – a Couple of Thoughts

I headed off to Mines & Money in Islington yesterday, largely to see the launch of 100 Inspirational Women in Mining, a new book produced by Amanda Van Dyke and her Women in Mining Organisation. Yes, there was free champagne at the launch.

Well done to Amanda for the book. Under her leadership WIM in London has grown to 1000 members and is taken very seriously and the industry heavyweights at the event testified to that.

The event hall is packed with booths and folks are putting a brave face on life in the industry. Rick Rule of Sprott told them “you’ve felt the pain now wait for the gain.” Sure thing Rick but will everyone enjoy the gain and how long must we wait?

It still does not appear to have sunk in, in some quarters of this world, that investors who have lost 95% plus on companies where management took the piss on remuneration
